The Maritime Museum of Mallorca has two headquarters. This small and charming museum is located in one of the most wonderful surroundings of the island, the mirador de la Miranda, next to the oratory of Santa Caterina. It was founded in the 13th century.
Through the Museum of the Sea you can enjoy a journey back in time, to know which were the great sailors of Sóller, those sailors who sailed to France, and brought new customs and words, and also to Algiers, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, where they exported products such as oranges, olive oil, almonds or carobs.
You will also meet five generations of riverbank carpenters, the March family, builders of the “pailebotes“, the big ships that made commercial travel possible.
Finally, you will discover the changes that have taken place in the fishing trade over the last few decades, with the introduction of nylon and engines, which have gradually replaced latin sails.
You can take the tour through two rooms, where different objects and oral testimonies will help us to understand how the Port of Sóller and Mallorca have changed in the last centuries.
You can visit us individually or in a group, with a maximum of 20 people per guided tour, with previous request.
Guided tours can be arranged via e-mail: informaciomaritim@conselldemallorca.net.
