Mare de Déu de Bonay

In 1606, due to a serious drought that threatened the crops, it was decided to go up to the sanctuary in a rogatory procession to ask the Virgin for the rain they needed. After the procession, it rained and they had a good harvest. From that moment on, the sanctuary and the mountain received the name Bonany (good year).

The present church was built between 1920 and 1925 on top of the Baroque church (demolished in 1919). It is in the historicist style with neo-baroque roots. It has a Latin floor plan without side chapels and a barrel vault.

The image of the Virgin of Bonany, a polychrome wood carving, is venerated in the "camarín", an elevated and accessible chapel located at the back of the altar.

A few metres away, we find the Juníper Serra cross designed by the local craftsman Joan Vives Lliteras. This cross of stone was erected in 1949 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the departure of the Father Serra. The location of the monument is the hilltop called Penya del Calvari, at the front of the Sanctuary Mare de Déu de Bonany, the same place where Juníper spoke the last sermon to the inhabitants of Petra before he started the trip to America. At the foot of the cross is a commemorative plaque with the municipal coat of arms. The cross is similar to the crosses made of tree trunks that the missionary used to lift when he founded the missions.
