Back Maria de la Salut
Maria de la Salut

Inland municipality located in the center of the island, in the region of Pla de Mallorca. Maria de la Salut is a small, quiet village with a great agricultural tradition. The surrounding landscape is filled with the most typical crops of the Pla: large extensions of cereals and fields of almond and carob trees.
In the village, the following are worth mentioning: the parish church of Mare de Déu de la Salut, built between the 18th and 19th centuries, with a very special bell tower with oriental reminiscences; the Fonda chapel, from 1898, annexed to the church and fitted out as an exhibition hall; and the rectory building, from 1760. Strolling through the town centre, we can also admire the houses of traditional architecture, very simple, and small family gardens with vegetables and fruit trees.
A good time to visit the village is on market day. The weekly markets in Mallorca are very traditional and busy and in Maria de la Salut, on Fridays, stands are set up with seasonal, fresh and quality local produce. In addition, markets are a good place to meet and connect with locals.
çOne of the most outstanding products is the ramellet tomato, a highly valued local variety and an essential ingredient in the traditional pa amb oli, bread with oil (peasant bread, tomato, oil and salt). The rather small tomatoes are traditionally strung on a cord, forming strings, and in this way they can be kept fresh for months. In Maria, this product has a special place in the Fira nocturna de la Tomàtiga de Ramellet (Ramellet Tomato Night Fair), which is held on the second Friday in August. At the fair there are stands with local crafts and products, music, gastronomy... and demonstrations of how to prepare and string the tomatoes.
