Palau del Consell

El Palau (Palace) del Consell is the main seat of government of the Consell de Mallorca (Council of Majorca), the island's representative and governing body since 1979. Designed by the architect Joaquín Pavía in 1882, was constructed over the old city prison (1230-1870) and initially it housed the Diputación, a provincial institution of the early nineteenth century that controlled and governed the town councils.

This building is an example of Neo-gothic Majorca. Marés sandstone was used in its construction and for the sculptures and ornaments a valued stone from a village in Majorca called Santanyí was chosen. The magnificent entrance doors, the colossal staircase, the assembly hall and the spectacular glass windows where coats of arms of varios municipalities of the island are represented (Pollença, Inca, Alcúdia, Felanitx, Llucmajor, Manacor and Sóller), stand out in the interior.

Majorca is the largest island of the Balearic archipelago, situated in the westernmost Mediterranean. The Balearic lslands, whose capital city is Palma, is one of the seventeen Autonomous Communities in Spain. The Government of theBalearic lslands exercises administrative and polítical control over the group of island territories, although each island exercises self-government through their own island councils.
