Cura Sanctuary

Puig de Randa is located in the southern part of Pla de Mallorca, in the municipality of Algaida, bordering that of Llucmajor. On this gentle mountain, visible from a large part of Mallorca, is the sanctuary of the Virgen de Cura, which became famous in the 16th century.  Ramon Llull retired to Puig de Randa when he was about thirty years old. There he lived the life of a hermit in a cave, gave himself up to meditation and became enlightened. According to tradition, it was in Randa that he decided to write the Ars, his great work, in which he set out an ambitious philosophical system of universal scope aimed at finding the truth. The sanctuary fell into decay in the 19th century and was restored in the early 20th century by Bishop Pere Joan Campins. The Franciscan tertiary regular friars took it over in 1913 and installed the novitiate of Mallorca there. A small community of monks remains there today; there is a bar, a restaurant and an inn for pilgrims and visitors.
